Training Description: Intersectional Gender-Based Analysis Plus helps development NGOs, civil society organizations, philanthropic foundations, community organizations, and networks to better understand the uneven and inequitable impact that humanitarian and development initiatives can have on the people and communities they intend to serve.

This virtual, live, and interactive course will build knowledge and skills in intersectional gender analysis at the individual, community and institutional (mezzo), and macro levels. It will equip participants with the tools and guidance to use intersectional gender analysis to advance social justice and social change by promoting structural solutions to systemic inequalities and various forms of oppression that go beyond individual adaptation and resilience.

This training is for development & humanitarian aid practitioners involved in planning, execution & monitoring of programs. In specific, the learning trajectory offers practical skills & knowledge for people who:

  • want to learn about new approaches to gender and social inclusion analysis

  • are ready to self-reflect on their own power, positionality, and biases

  • enjoy learning from and with people who come from different backgrounds and lived experiences

  • want to be challenged to think more critically and deeply about intersectionality, power, and how to apply it into gender and social inclusion analysis in the development sector

All participants will receive a participants’ manual with key terms, resources, and templates.

Trainer: Njeri Kimotho is an international policy advisor, Gender Equality & Social Inclusion (GESI) expert, capacity builder, and mentor working in inclusive sector transformation. Session 1: Intersectional Gender-Based Analysis Basics. Understand the concept of intersectionality and identify the ways in which social markers such as race, ethnicity, disability, and age can interact with gender identity to create further power imbalances.

Session 2: Power: Types, spaces, and forms of power. Apply the intersectionality lens and learning the “how” of power analysis while challenging our own assumptions from a power perspective

Session 3: Introduction to frameworks of gender analysis and intersectionality lens. Recognize the Gender Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) framework and its central components. Learn how to approach the GBA+ framework from both a gendered and intersectional perspective.

Session 4: Intersectional GBA+ at the institutional level: mezzo and macro. Apply GBA+ to identify both structural and intersectional barriers to full participation in society and exploration of approaches (including social and economic policies and advocacy agendas) for dismantling above barriers.

Session 5: Intersectional GBA+ as part of monitoring and evaluation. Utilize the policy-program-service delivery continuum to integrate GBA+ into evaluations while maintaining focus on relevance, design and delivery, effectiveness, and efficiency.

In September, I participated in the “Intersectional Gender Analysis” course with Njeri Kimotho, the main themes of this training was the analysis of power, gender analysis and intersectionality, and GBA+ on the institutional mezzo and macro levels. I like trainings that challenges me and push me to ask more questions, and this one is certainly one of them! Njeri’s international experience in addition to coming from the global south gave so much richness to the course, because we could use the tools on complex on the ground situations. The other participants were dedicated, experienced colleagues who had so much to add, and because the sessions were participatory, we enjoyed an atmosphere of shared learning and an exchange in experiences and knowledge. This training helped me answer some of my questions about gender and intersectionality which I expect to use at work and in research.
