This testimonial was written by Amaranta López López, a PhD student in Philosophy. Amaranta participated in the Feminist AI 101 course (renamed Ethical Artificial Intelligence) with Emily Springer, PhD earlier this month (October 2022).

Last week, I participated in the training “Feminist AI 101," facilitated by Emily Springer, PhD. The main themes of this training were the analysis of power in artificial intelligence and feminist approaches as methods to implement ethical AI projects in the development and social impact sector. I got meaningful insights both on the technical side and on tools to develop my social sciences and humanities skillset in this domain.

For me, the most valuable take-aways from this training were :

💭 A collective reflection of our role as critical thinkers and/or professionals in the development and social impact sector, that would allow us to build more confidence to approach what is commonly thought of as an exclusively technical subject.

📚 A generous curation of resources (academic, journalistic, white papers, reports, public outreach content, concrete examples of best practices, etc.) to consolidate what I learned during the training, and to deepen my understanding of the subject.

🥰 An inclusive and embodied pedagogy: I learned so much while having fun!

I feel inspired in my PhD research on intersectional feminist approaches to AI, and can’t wait to keep the conversation going with the interesting people I met during the training. If you are looking for a way to quickly build up a panorama of this field, this is it !
