Power and positionality: gender and development in Iraq

It was 2012, and I was in Bnaslawa, a town outside of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The purpose of my trip was to conduct a “gender assessment”—a development industry term for a type of participatory re-search designed to determine the extent to which a project has integrated principles of gender equity into its activities.

Holding male gender equality advocates accountable

I was a big fan of Michael Kimmel's work as a leading scholar and advocate for engaging men in gender equality. When I saw him speak at a recent event in Washington DC, I began having doubts about his message. When I heard about the allegations against Kimmel of harassment and sexism, my doubts began to make sense.
